Weddings in the South: Hurricanes, Part 1

Hurricane Season

Welcome to South Louisiana, where moment’s notice torrential downpours, hurricanes, and other weird weather occurrences are all as normal as a fall Saturday football game! We’re here to help you decide what to plan for and how not to freak out while planning a fall wedding in the south!

Here are the facts:

Hurricane season opens at the beginning of summer, June 1st, and ends mid-fall, November 30th, with the peak of the season falling around the middle of September. Getting married anywhere along the Gulf Coast or destination weddings in the Caribbean can be cause for concern while planning.

It all calls for a drive-thru daiquiri if you ask us! Luckily, we’ve done our research and it turns out if the forecast doesn’t call for a hurricane landing that week, you’ll have a fantastic day.  Just read these wedding planning tips and look out for the rest of our Hurricane Wedding Series to help put you at ease:

1.) Be optimistic.

This is the most important thing and we can’t say it enough to our brides. We can give you all the pretty images, tips, hints, and even plan your whole day, but if rain on your big day will inevitably dampen your mood, we can’t help that! Plus, it’s no fun for guests, friends, & family to see their beautiful bride in hysterics. Always hope for the best, but make the most of it & always smile!

2.) Be prepared.

If you’re planning a late summer or fall wedding in the south, you should have a plan. If you have to move the wedding date or location, you’ll need to let your vendors and guests know about the changes. As you collect addresses from guests to send save-the-dates and invitations, get extra contact information from them as well; such as a phone number or email address. Make a phone tree for contacting guests. Put your bridesmaids in charge of contacting friends and parents in charge of contacting family members. Make sure your planner and coordinator has the contact information for all of your vendors so they can let them know your plans. Some guests may already be evacuating or will be too busy preparing for the hurricane to attend the wedding, but as a courtesy let everyone know the change of plans so they won’t have to worry about offending you.

Watch the weather daily, even hourly, as the day gets closer. If it looks like a hurricane may be approaching landfall near the site of your wedding, move ahead with your plan.

3.) Be flexible.

As much as you want this day to be the most perfect and memorable day, sometimes things don’t always go as planned. However, this doesn’t mean that you can’t have a beautiful day that you’ll remember forever. Keep these items in mind and try to stay flexible in your last minute decisions.

And remember, your wedding day is meant for staying calm and keeping on.
